mystery parts found in Trixon drums

I have owned several Trixon drums which were assembled using an "L"-shaped small piece of flat aluminum casting with an opening in one side. Often one or more (usually three) interior lug mounting screws pass through these pieces rather than the standard circle flat washers. The material used is identical to the spring holder attachment on the side of the model "Professional" Hi-Hat Stand. Any ideas as to why these were used?
